The garden is organized to be visitor friendly. Rocks and plants are interspersed with one another. Rocks from the Great Lakes region are labeled according to the rock type, the name of the rock unit, the age of the rock unit, and the location from which the specimen was collected. When appropriate the donor is listed too. Selected plants are labeled with their formal species name and common name. Around the lower picnic area near the main museum building there are rocks labeled only according to rock type as some of these are from outside of the Great Lakes region. The upper picnic area includes several additional specimens.
